This article describes a two-decade quest by a retired scientist to discover the identity of the woman behind an iconic 1950s Las Vegas tourism ad used to capitalize on the public’s fascination with nuclear explosions.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Understand the fascination that nuclear explosions—particularly nuclear clouds—held for the public in the 1950s and 1960s. 
  • Consider the historical significance of the early nuclear age, to the extent that a tourism industry was established to exploit it. 
  • Explore the legacy and impact that has led to the establishment of the Atomic Museum in Las Vegas.
