The initiative aims to address risks posed by increasingly autonomous systems. The forum will bring together governments, industry and experts to promote responsible AI use, human oversight and safeguards against misuse.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Explain the risks and challenges associated with military applications of artificial intelligence, including concerns about diminishing human oversight and the potential for autonomous decision-making in critical domains.
  • Describe the purpose and objectives of the UN’s new military AI initiative, including the roles of UNIDIR, international cooperation, and multi-stakeholder engagement in developing AI governance frameworks.
  • Evaluate the importance of responsible AI development and regulation, including industry accountability, adherence to international law, protection of human rights, and efforts to prevent the misuse of AI by armed groups.
