This article examines the Dartmouth Conference, held at a college campus in New England in the United States, in 1956; and highlights how the conference is widely considered the birthplace of artificial intelligence (AI) as we know it today.

Summary

  1. Officially called The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence.
  2. Remembered as the Dartmouth Conference, it went for eight weeks. 
  3. Included some of the brightest people in computer science, mathematics, and cognitive psychology.
  4. Ultimately led to ChatGPT and many other kinds of AI now used.
