The move would restore nuclear weapon capabilities on roughly 30 B-52H Stratofortress bombers.

Summary

  1. B-52s currently carry conventional munitions only as part of New START arms control treaty with Russia.
  2. Current New START treaty expires in February 2026.
  3. Conversion would once again make B-52s part of the US’ nuclear triad.
