AI is expected to be critical for military operations in disrupted communication environments. Therefore, success depends on developing trustworthy, resilient systems, rigorous testing, user feedback, and training that enables personnel to use AI confidently.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role of AI in future military operations, particularly how AI can support decision-making and autonomous functions in denied, degraded, intermittent, and limited (DDIL) communication environments.
  • Assess the challenges of implementing military AI systems, including issues of trust, governance, testing, accountability, and responsible use by service-members.
  • Identify strategies for effective AI adoption in defence settings, such as incorporating user feedback, conducting realistic testing and red-teaming (simulating the enemy), and providing education and training to build confidence in AI-enabled capabilities.
