Commissioning of the James Webb telescope is progressing well, with the first images due June –July 2022.

  • NASA has completed 3 of the 7 stages to bring the 18 hexagonal segments of the James Webb space telescope’s primary mirror into alignment.
  • The mirror segments now form a single image.
  • 6 motors control each segment moving and tilting the reflective surfaces.
  • Fine-tuning will ensure the segments are optimally aligned with themselves and its four science instruments.
