Summary

The author Jane Hanson says that to become a strong leader, you need to believe that you are deserving, capable and likely to succeed. Hanson goes on to make the following points:

  • Make a career plan, set goals and make yourself stand out from the crowd.*
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your trade and present at Continuous Training (CT) lectures.
  • Leadership after hours. Join a local board or organisation to help prepare you to be an effective leader in the workplace.
  • Connect with your team and take an interest in what they have to say (but always respect your team's right to privacy).
  • Structure some activities to help to bring your team together.
  • Accept that you have strengths and weaknesses.
  • Exploit your strengths and don't be discouraged by what you can't do.
  • It is not uncommon to have a fear of being bold. Being bold can at times be a sign of confidence.**
