IQ gets you into elite organisations, EQ helps you lead them.Summary
In an organisation characterised by technical excellence and high achievers, like Australia's Air Force, how are leaders differentiated? The USAFs Journal of Character and Leadership Development is replete with relevant and interesting papers. This article (pp.43-52) is on enhancing Emotional Intelligence (EQ) skills. EQ can help develop leaders of character who are distinguished by their exceptional values and mettle. These leaders develop people by inspiring performance towards a common and noble purpose. Leaders should integrate EQ into everyday work which can be achieved by being authentic. Leaders with high EQ are aware of the source and meaning of emotions and act as a role model in terms of expressing them, especially in stressful situations. Develop your leadership character and set some time aside to read the whole journal.
