The production of affordable hydrogen has taken a major step forward, according to Australian researchers, who claim we are now much closer to the time when green hydrogen will be competitive with fossil fuels as an energy source.Summary
This article by Peter Hannam, writing for The Guardian, makes the following points:
- Hysata, Using technology developed at the University of Wollongong, has patented capillary-fed electrolysis cells that are 25% more efficient than existing processes, at splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.
- This process could help the Morrison government's objective of producing hydrogen at $2 a kilogram.
- At $2 a kilogram, hydrogen becomes competitive with oil and gas.
- The Government's national hydrogen strategy predicts that an efficient means of extracting hydrogen from water could generate an additional $11B per anum to GDP by 2050.
