BLUF
Workplace bullying can occur in many forms, such as humiliation, harassment, blocking advancement, discrimination, intimidation and rumour-mongering.Summary
This article by Heidi Lynne Kurter, writing for Forbes, makes the following three points about how organizations empower workplace bullies:
- Prioritizing Company Outcomes over Problems. Bullying prevents achieving full potential in the workplace due to decreased engagement, productivity and performance, increased turnover, and an eroded reputation.
- Failing to take Complaints Seriously. This can send the message to the targeted employee that the bully is protected and shows the bully that their behaviour is acceptable.
- Giving Bullies a Slap on the Wrist. Companies empower bullies when they aren’t consistent on how they address and implement sanctions against bullies
