Regional airline Rex will soon begin to trial the use of planes with retrofitted electric engines. Trials will begin as soon as 2024 on short regional flights of less than one hour.

Summary

This article by Hannah Dowling, writing for Australian Aviation, makes the following points:
  • Rex’s deputy chairman John Sharp said one of the airline’s 34-seat Saab 340s would be retrofitted with an electric and hydrogen-powered MagniX engine.
  •  This new technology will be trialled on short routes such as Adelaide-Mount Gambier.
  • The trial will involve using an electric motor supported by a combination of both batteries and hydrogen.
  • Retrofitting existing aircraft with zero-emission electric propulsion will make the converted aircraft up to 40 per cent quieter than its predecessors and see a similar percentage reduction in operating costs.
