BLUF

People generally self- categorise themselves as either an introvert or an extrovert; however, some people can exhibit traits that combine both introversion and extroversion—ambiverts.

Summary

The ADDP 00.6 Leadership Ed 2, para 3.47 notes that:

....know yourself and seek self-improvement. To know themselves, leaders need to understand their own preferences, strengths and weaknesses…

According to Jacob Cashman, there is another category to consider, the ambivert. An ambivert is a person who combines traits from both extraversion and introversion. Some of these traits are as follows:

  1. Wants to be around but not necessarily with people.
  2. Can get into deep intimate conversations.
  3. Can adjust personality.
  4. Can hold a crowd, but not for long.
  5. Find it hard to express themselves in some conversations.
  6. Needs to hold onto the familiar.
  7. Is comfortable in both social and solitary situations.
  8. Understands what drives others.
  9. Enjoys both solo and group projects.
  10. Unsure of their personality category.

Like all self-diagnosis, these signs are indicative only and not meant to define personality. Being aware of yours and others’ social personality, might make you a more effective leader and manager.
