Communication is a two-way street.

Summary

Knowing how to fix any problem or weakness begins with identifying what it is. In the context of communication these weaknesses can act as barriers to achieving your outcomes effectively and positively. Focusing on imparting information only is half the story and a highly egocentric approach which may be costing you time and frustration. Check out these communication barriers and skills and test them out with this two part experiment: First, plan your next challenging conversation to have increased focus on what, and how, the other person is receiving your information. Were you required to adjust your angle of approach in a specific way? Next, revisit the conversation with that same person, using this new approach. Was the response more positive and effective? Consolidating the answers to these questions with your adapted approach is you taking the first steps to improving your effective communication ability.
