The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expanding our knowledge about the Universe—by discovering previously unknown galaxies, one of which may have been formed soon after the Universe began.Summary
Monisha Ravisetti writing in CNET, makes the following points:
- The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey has produced an enormous, full-colour sky mosaic.
- Called Epoch 1, covers a small patch of sky near the handle of the Big Dipper constellation.
- JWST has found Maisie's galaxy that may have existed only 290 million years after the Big Bang—much earlier than expected.
- Many newly found galaxies have a high redshift which means they are further away from Earth.
