With an unprecedented number of new satellites in space, our space debris problem is getting worse.

Summary

  1. Most of this junk comes from abandoned satellites and discarded jet engines.
  2. Scientists are worried about fragmentation resulting in a dense cloud of debris around Earth.
  3. This debris, known as ‘Kessler syndrome’, could threaten future space missions.
