Asian nations, including Australia and Japan, are accelerating oil stockpiling and development of a regional power grid after supply risks exposed by the Iran conflict. The aim is to strengthen energy security by reducing dependence.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how geopolitical disruptions to global energy supply chains, particularly those affecting the Strait of Hormuz, are driving Asian countries to expand oil stockpiling and improve energy security.
  • Analyse regional energy cooperation initiatives, including joint oil reserves, the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), and ASEAN efforts to develop a regional electricity grid.
  • Assess the challenges and opportunities associated with Southeast Asia’s energy transition, including renewable energy targets, current performance gaps, and strategies to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.
