Meditation offers proven health benefits, but research shows about one in 10 meditators experience lasting adverse effects, including anxiety, insomnia, emotional dysregulation and psychosis. It highlights the need for greater awareness, informed consent and support.

  • Describe both the benefits and potential risks of meditation, including the range of positive mental and physical health outcomes and the adverse effects that some individuals may experience.
  • Consider common meditation-related adverse effects, including symptoms of hyperarousal, hypoarousal, emotional dysregulation, and psychosis.
  • Explain the importance of informed consent, risk awareness, and appropriate support when practising or teaching meditation.
