BLUF
A solar-powered electric aircraft—a modified Elektra One—unofficially reached 31,237 feet over Switzerland recently, demonstrating the potential of lightweight, solar-electric propulsion for high-altitude, long-endurance flight. The aircraft conducted a five-hour, nine-minute flight.Learning Outcomes
- Examine the design and operational considerations for solar-electric aircraft, including ultralight construction and energy management.
- Understand human factors in high-altitude unpressurized flight, including pressure suits and thermal considerations.
- Evaluate the strategic and technological implications of renewable-energy aviation for surveillance, research, and endurance missions.
