The Australian Defence Force and University of NSW are trialling Viper telescope-based space surveillance to improve space awareness. The trial will explore automated analysis and monitoring of satellites and debris to strengthen future space operations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the concept of Space Domain Awareness (SDA) and its importance in detecting, tracking and identifying objects and activities in Earth’s orbit.
  • Describe the role of ground-based optical sensors and the Viper telescope in enhancing Australia’s ability to monitor satellites, space debris and other orbital activities.
  • Assess the benefits of automation and direct sensor tasking in improving the effectiveness, responsiveness and sovereignty of Defence space surveillance operations.
