Australia’s west coast has supported allied maritime forces for more than a century — the current arrangement continues that established strategic pattern while preparing for future submarine operations. Fremantle has hosted numerous allied submarines during wartime.

The article demonstrates how geography, alliance relationships and access to Western Australia have influenced Australia’s strategic choices over more than a century.

Military History: Develop an awareness of how historical sources inform current strategic, operational and tactical decision-making. The article uses the history of Cockburn Sound and Fremantle’s role in supporting allied submarines to explain the strategic reasoning behind current arrangements.
