BLUF

Political polarization is reinforced by outgroup bias and differing moral priorities. Conservatives and liberals share underlying social values but express them differently; curiosity and empathy are more effective than facts or arguments for bridging divides.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how outgroup homogeneity bias contributes to political polarization, and recognise the diversity of views that exist within political and social groups.
  • Describe Morality-as-Cooperation (MAC) theory and analyse how shared human moral instincts can lead to different political values and priorities.
