Dementia risk can be reduced by up to 45 percent by exercising in midlife and later life—even for some with a genetic predisposition. According to the findings, however, early adulthood activity has no significant effect.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how midlife and late-life physical activity significantly reduces dementia risk compared to early adulthood activity.
  • Evaluate how the APOE ε4 allele influences the protective effects of physical activity at different life stages.
  • Identify practical strategies for maintaining physical activity later in life to support brain health.
