The Lunar South Pole is believed to be rich in strategically valuable rare-earth materials. And, with China’s recent Chang’e 6 mission there, it’s a reminder of the looming challenges surrounding geopolitical competition in lunar space.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Broaden knowledge of the rapidly accelerating emergence of air power in space.
  • Recognise the importance placed on critical minerals, and the race to secure access to them.
  • Consider the need for a rules-based order, due to there currently being no agreed-upon process for resolving lunar conflicts.
