Japan has approved its biggest defence budget yet. It aims to achieve 2 per cent of gross domestic product ( Australia 2.05% in 25/26) sooner than planned. Missiles and drones are key buys—funding will likely mean higher taxes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify how regional tension can drive faster spending decisions and capability trade-offs.
  • Explain why missiles, drones, and coastal systems are prioritised when deterrence is focused on distance and sea lanes.
  • Consider how funding choices and workforce limits can shape readiness, sustainment, and long-term planning.
