This article (and book) argue that stronger human-animal relationships come from understanding animals’ perspectives, respecting their individuality, and empathy. It promotes relationships that improve animal welfare, reduce frustration, and enrich life for both animals and humans.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Explain how understanding an animal’s perspective can improve human-animal relationships and enhance the wellbeing of both animals and their caregivers.
  • Apply the concepts of empathy, exploration, empowerment, and realistic expectations to support positive, respectful, and mutually beneficial interactions with companion animals.
  • Evaluate the importance of animal agency and individual needs in fostering stronger relationships and improving the quality of life for animals and humans.
