BLUF

The War accelerated major advances in aviation, communications, medicine, transport and weaponry. Aircraft, tanks, submarines, gas warfare and anti-aircraft systems transformed combat, while medical and communication innovations improved survival and military effectiveness.

  • Explain how World War I accelerated scientific and technological innovation, and describe how advances in aviation, communications, medicine, naval warfare, and armoured vehicles changed the nature of warfare.
  • Analyse the impact of key World War I technologies and weapons, including aircraft, tanks, submarines, gas warfare, anti-aircraft systems, and communications equipment, on military strategy and battlefield outcomes.
  • Evaluate the successes and limitations of wartime innovations, using examples to assess how technological developments improved military effectiveness while also creating new challenges and unintended consequences.
