BLUF
2020 is the sixteenth anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami, the most devastating Tsunami ever recorded—the region has not forgotten, and neither should we.Summary
Nearly sixteen years ago an earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale struck off the Indonesian West Coast on 26 December 2004. This triggered the worst tsunami ever recorded, devastating communities across 14 countries, killing over 227 000 and displacing many more. In 2014 Sky News ran a 10th-anniversary special report where survivors told their story and reflect on their physical and psychological journeys since. This report is worth watching again. Their heart-wrenching recounts remind us of nature’s power and the stark reality facing those who respond to such disasters. As we deal with COVID-19 worth remembering how our world has dealt with previous tragedies.
