Mental health organisation R U O K speaks with empathy expert Mr Daniel Murray about exactly what empathy is and why it’s a vital tool for leaders in today’s workplace.

Summary

We hear the word ‘empathy’ used a lot. But what is empathy and how can we use it to better understand our people? Empathy expert Mr Daniel Murray shares his own definition of empathy and talks about why being empathetic is vital in a modern workplace. Mr Murray says that many workplaces still have a poor culture where employees don’t feel valued and believes that leaders should focus more heavily on empathising with their staff. He argues that in order to create a more ethical culture in the workplace, we need to develop empathy and embrace it. Only by doing that, he says, can you create a genuine culture of trust and loyalty where employees feel valued, are happier and more productive.
