Dr Praino from Flinders University is leading a team that is developing tools to make it easier to measure Australia’s space power relative to other nations.Summary
Space power measurements will include technical capacity, and the ability of a nation to operate in space without help from other nations. Dr Praino said that Australia is a middle-power country but that from a strategic perspective, we need to increase our space power. The ADF has a particular interest in this project and is investing $7 billion dollars over the next decade. According to Minister of Defence Linda Reynolds, most of this money will be invested in developing a network of Australian (sovereign) controlled satellites. Some space facilities will be in regional Australia and should provide a source of income for regional areas. Worth considering the implications for members of our air force in terms of new opportunities for careers related to developing and operating space power capabilities.
