Research suggests adding a 15‑minute cardio finisher to weight training neither significantly boosts, nor harms, muscle and strength gains. It isn’t a shortcut to bigger gains, and separate sessions may better suit power-focused athletes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the concept of concurrent training and describe how combining cardio and weight training affects muscle growth, strength, and aerobic fitness.
  • Evaluate the evidence surrounding the ‘interference effect’, including when cardio may have a small impact on explosive power or strength gains in experienced lifters.
  • Apply evidence-based exercise programming principles by recommending appropriate timing, order, and volume of cardio and resistance training to support individual fitness goals.
