One year after the EU’s Roadmap, progress is mixed, with 15 milestones on track, 17 behind schedule and 13 unclear. The report urges Europe to prioritise critical defence gaps.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the purpose and progress of the EU Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030, including its key objectives, flagship projects, and milestone outcomes after its first year of implementation.
  • Assess the challenges affecting European defence readiness, including funding constraints, member-state coordination, industrial capacity limitations, and reliance on the United States for critical military capabilities.
  • Evaluate priority capability areas for strengthening European security, such as drones, air and missile defence, deep-strike systems, and strategic enablers, and explain why these should be prioritised over duplicating capabilities already provided by the US.
