Burnout worsens when energy austerity leads individuals to cut joy and energy-giving activities. Recovery requires actively reinvesting in nourishing activities, pursuing meaningful engagement, and incorporating multiple types of rest to restore energy, resilience, and well-being.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise the limitations of “energy austerity” and the importance of sustaining joy and energy-giving activities to maintain performance and morale.
  • Understand that recovery from burnout requires active reinvestment in meaningful and restorative practices, not just passive rest.
  • Appreciate the multidimensional nature of rest—physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, and spiritual—and its role in sustaining operational effectiveness and personal resilience.
