Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has exposed the weaknesses in its army, which include: poor and inflexible leadership, poor troop morale, corruption, inadequate logistics, old equipment, and lack of support for front-line troops.Summary
Brad Lendon writing for CNN, makes the following points:
- Many Russian troops do not know why Putin invaded Ukraine.
- Ukraine targeted and killed Russian generals and colonels who would have been expected to rally the Russian forces.
- Due to Western sanctions, Russian industry is finding it challenging to replace battlefield losses.
- Russians being encouraged to join the army by commutation of prison sentences, big cash bonuses, and then being given little training—are unlikely to make effective soldiers.
