Autistic veterans are an overlooked population facing unique challenges at the intersection of autism, PTSD, and military service. Despite apparent overlap and significant support needs, research, services, and recognition for autistic veterans remain severely lacking.Learning Outcomes
- Explain the unique intersection of autism, military service, and trauma, including factors that may contribute to elevated rates of PTSD and other mental health challenges among autistic veterans.
- Identify how military environments can both support and mask autistic traits, and describe the challenges autistic veterans may face when transitioning to civilian life.
- Evaluate current gaps in research, services, and support systems for autistic veterans, and discuss the implications for clinical practice, policy development, and future research.
