The logistics industry is adopting exoskeletons to improve individual productivity while at the same time reducing the risk of workplace injury.Summary
This submission by Elyse Scalia for the Berkeley MEng op-ed contest makes these points about the adoption of exoskeletons into warehouse industries:
- The increasing demand for e-commerce places warehouse employees at risk.
- Workers perform repetitive motions over time, resulting in chronic work-related injuries.
- Body support exoskeletons offer a wearable intervention to mitigate the loss of productivity and medical and personal costs.
- Costs currently limit exoskeleton usage, and it does take time and training to get used to working while wearing an exoskeleton.
