The Royal Australian Navy is poised to expand its firepower over the next decade, in line with the 2023 Defence Strategic Review.


  1. Upgrades to the existing Hobart class destroyers and six large optionally crewed* surface vessels acquired.
  2. Hunter class frigates reduced to 6.
  3. 11 new general-purpose frigates.
  4. Total planned missile cells increase from 432 to 528.
  5. Crew shortages challenging.
*Optionally crewed" refers to vessels that can operate with or without a crew, designed for flexibility in various missions. These vessels can perform tasks remotely or with personnel on board, depending on the operation's needs, enhancing safety and endurance capabilities.
