Afeeya Akhand, Luisa Gyhn, Marcus Schultz and Shivangi Seth, writing in the Strategist, note the following threats:
Threats
- Climate change- the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report notes that, without serious action, 2100 predicted 3.2-degree global warming would lead to food insecurity, pandemics, conflict, etc.
- Challenges to democracy and the rule of law- the Israeli government’s proposal to enable the Knesset (Parliament) to override Supreme Court decisions threatens democracy and may lead to civil war.
- Information operations- US Special Operations Command aims to build next-generation capabilities in social media, deep fakes, influence operations, digital deception, communication disruption, and disinformation.
- Economic instability- the UK Integrated Security Fund will try to combat global economic volatility and insecurity.
- Terrorism- destabilising Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, the Sahel and coastal West Africa.
